Haunted Corn Maze

The Haunted Corn Maze is a staple of Conner Prairie’s annual Headless Horseman Festival. Every three years, the theme of the maze is updated to tell a new story. In 2023, a new story about crop circles and aliens took shape. I created a storyline for this first year that involved a news reporter being abducted while reporting on the crop circles and guests being left to fend for themselves to survive. For this project, I served as a Show Writer, Concept Developer, and 3D Modeler. This version of the maze never made it past the concept stage, but some of the designs did influence the 2024 maze layout.

Storyline Synopsis:

As guests enter the maze from the queue, they find themselves in a clearing in the corn where a local news van is parked. Suddenly, the door to the van flies open, allowing guests to see a bank of video monitors, technical equipment, and a technician sitting inside. The technician turns around to address the guests and asks them to wait for just a moment as they are about to do a live news segment with a reporter that is further on inside doing a story on the crop circles. He invites the guests to view the live segment on the monitors.

As the live feed begins, it is clear that the reporter is standing in a makeshift field laboratory, with computers and other pieces of technology in the background where tests are being conducted. As the reporter begins describing the scene, suddenly a loud, low-pitch vibrating hum sound is heard and bright lights illuminate the space around the reporter. The screen flashes a bright white as we hear the reporter scream, then the feed is lost. After a moment, the live feed comes back, but the video is sideways, as if the camera was suddenly dropped on the ground. A giant, shadowy spider scurries across the screen, captured by the camera laying on its side. Perhaps it was just really close to the lens…

The clearly shaken tech in the van turns back to the guests and exclaims, “Okay, well, I guess the live segment is over. You can…go on ahead. I think I’m going to…stay here. Good luck.” He turns around and slams the van door closed.

As guests progress further into the corn, they are surrounded by the sounds of various insects and other creatures of nature that sound slightly off – as if they are mutated in some way. Soon, they enter another clearing in the corn where they see a bunch of computers and other pieces of technology cobbled together on an elevated platform as a sort of makeshift laboratory – the same one that was just seen in the live feed from the van. The camera is clearly seen dropped on the ground laying on its side.

A figure bursts into the scene from the opposite side, running in a panic. It’s the camera man. He starts shouting to the guests, “I don’t know what happened! There was a loud noise and a burst of light and she just…disappeared!” He jumps up onto the platform. “She was right here!” Suddenly, beams of light all around the scene start illuminating toward the sky and the same loud, low-pitch hum from the earlier live feed is heard. A pulse of bright light flashes through the scene, and with a puff of smoke, all of the computers and electrical equipment go completely dark and silent as we hear the screams of the camera man. In an instant, the sound stops and the skyward lights disappear as the computers and technical equipment come back to life. As guests eyes adjust, they realize that the camera man has disappeared into thin air.

As guests press further on into the corn, they enter a narrow path that is covered with a clear plastic tent-like tunnel. Radioactive symbols are everywhere. A walkie talkie sitting on a table of supplies crackles to life and chatter is heard between other scientists out in the corn field. The static makes the transmission hard to hear, but words like “insects” and “radioactive substance” are clearly heard as guests pass by.

Guests enter a third clearing in the corn and are met by pools of goo containing glowing eggs that are cordoned off with barriers and radioactive symbols. A person in a hazmat suit seems to be examining one of the areas and is standing with their side to the incoming guests. The eggs glow in a pattern of light and goopy slime seems to bubble up at various times from the egg areas. As the guests approach, the person in the hazmat suit turns to reveal that half of the suit has been melted off by the egg slime and that side of their face/body is mangled and mutated. They start “chasing” the guests toward the scene exit while shouting “help me!”

Running for their lives, the guests enter another narrow passage through the corn. They hear rusting sounds as glowing eyes start to shine through the corn on both sides of the path, piercing through the darkness. As the guests enter yet another clearing, they notice cylindrical incubation tanks along the perimeter that contain mutated insect carcasses floating in a thick liquid. A small, ancient graveyard sits to one side with one grave that has clearly been dug up and an open coffin exposed. A nearby gurney has a limp, decomposed body on it, covered by a sheet with an arm dangling down to the side. As guests walk past, the body on the gurney suddenly sits up and its eyes glow red.

Leaving the incubation scene behind, guests are once again in a narrow path through the corn. They walk past a small vignette of spiders that are clearly crawling through a puddle of glowing alien goo. As they push on, the path becomes increasingly covered on both sides and overhead in a thick accumulation of spider webs. Pushing through the webs, guests find themselves in another clearing, this time with an old shed in the middle that has been torn in half by a crashed alien spacecraft. An old swing set sits next to the shed. The swings are clearly still moving. Did something just pass by, or is it just the wind? Hanging from the remnant of the shed are large two cocoon-like growths. They are very clearly humans that have been wrapped up in spider webs. Looking closely, guests notice that it is the news reporter and the camera man. Suddenly, a large mutated spider crashes through the shed and lurches toward the guests!

In a last ditch effort to save themselves, guests flee the scene and find themselves in an actual maze with multiple paths from which to choose. They must find their way out before the mutated spider or the aliens get them! Several creatures dressed in all black hooded robes with masks that have glowing red eyes are in the maze with alien zappers chasing after the guests encouraging them to exit the maze.

Exiting the corn, guests walk back to safety through a field of dead sunflowers.

2024 Maze Influence

While the storyline I proposed in 2023 was not utilized, it is clear to see how my 2023 maze design influenced the final 2024 design with a few tweaks.
